In March I had it! I was so frustrated with my pens. I’d always bought the cheap pens or received the complimentary pens – but they weren’t cutting it anymore! I was tired of having to switch pens while highlighting a book, or to switch pens in the middle of addressing an envelope, or to feel like pens contained no ink at all – and where just dry money receptacles, always wanting me to spend more.

This led to me research via Zakta for a better pen and thus I stumbled upon The Pen Addict. When I saw the author’s accolades for the Zebra Sarasa and the reasonable pricing (I was shocked at how high pen prices can go!) I decided to purchase a ten-pack of the 0.7mm. I am now ruined to all inexpensive pens.

I’ve been using my Zebra Sarasa pens constantly and they are holding up like champs! They are comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, always write well, last a long time, and on the list goes. I just purchased my second set of ten. No, none of my originals died or went dry – but my wife said, “Ooohh! Pretty.” and stole two of them and since then my cats have been hiding the rest. I still have 4-6 of them floating around, but I want to have a few more spares on hand, as I love just picking one up and beginning to write – knowing that the quality will be there!

So, if you haven’t tried Zebra Sarasa pens – go give them a try. Then let me know what you think! No, this is not an advertisement for Sarasa, I am not being paid by them, etc. I just REALLY like their pens.

Yes, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it – but I just read a YA book and enjoyed it. Honestly, I had no clue it was YA until just a few moments ago. I did wonder why Robinson chose to cast the protagonist as a young teenager.

Still, while the book is classified as YA it is probably important to note that it is YA in the same way that C.S. Lewis‘ Chronicles of Narnia, Philip Pullman‘s Subtle Knife, or Frank Peretti‘s Cooper Kids are YA. In other words, the topics addressed, the philosophical underpinnings, and sometimes the storyline are not blaise.

I’m not going to even begin to attempt a synopsis of this book – to do so without revealing too much of the thrill of the storyline is almost impossible. Instead, let me just note a few of the topics that are addressed in the novel that really drew in my attention:

Nephilim – I’m always a sucker for these guys. We know so little about them, other than their mention in Genesis and a few other brief passages, but there is plenty of opportunity to build lore around them.

Mythology (especially Norse) – Mythology is always fascinating, and I appreciate Robinson’s endeavors to provide an explanation for the origin of these myths.

Hollow Earth – Okay, its not strictly hollow earth – but it is kind of. You’ll feel some Journey to the Center of the Earth (Jules Vernes) vibes from this one, and perhaps a touch of The Lost World (Arthur Conan Doyle).

Ancient Man – Part of the novel revolves around Antartica as a green continent and the presence of ancient civilizations on the continent.

Large Creatures – I’m also a sucker for large creatures – e.g. prehistoric or modern gigantic marvels (dinosaurs and so on).

Charity really loved the character development and character interactions at the beginning and the end of the book – but was a little disappointed in the middle (when all the action occurred) due to the lack of character development.

Overall, I would give the book 5/5 stars, but for one issue – Robinson describes in excruciating detail several painful scenes – e.g. when someone or something suffers great pain or death. I’m not objecting due to any inability to write but simply because the passages where physically hard to read. One felt the pain of the characters, the disgust, the anguish – and while there is a sense in which one reads to understand, there is also a sense in which we read to relax…and those portions were not relaxing at all!

While there we stayed at Sleepy Hollow Lake Resort in Akron. I’ve been to Kingdom Bound a number of times over the years and have stayed at Darien Lake State Park, Skyline RV Resort, and now Sleepy Hollow. All provided a good experience – but I wanted to take a few moments to highlight Sleepy Hollow – as I was really impressed.

While their website needs a refresh, the actual resort is quite nice. Upon entering you immediately arrive at the office/store which is well-stocked with supplies and reasonably priced – a pleasant surprise. Just a little beyond is a nice playground. Continue up the main shoot and you see a small lake on the right side with a beach front, areas for fishing, and rental boats (e.g. paddle boats) available. The area is generally wooded and there are places apportioned for both RV and tenting – and a number of small one and two-bedroom cabins.

We stayed in a cabin – so I will focus in on these. Our cabin was two bedrooms. The master bedroom was larger with a large bed, the smaller bedroom was quite small with bunk beds – obviously targeted towards children. The couch in the kitchen/living room area pulled out into another full size bed. There was a stove, refrigerator/freezer, air conditioner (window unit), and kitchen table/chairs. The bathroom included an RV style toilet which worked just fine – running hot/cold water in both the sink and in the full-size bath tub.

Outside we had a picnic table and a fire pit. There were plenty of space for walking on the roads that lead around the campground, pavilions to eat at, and public restrooms/showers if needed (we didn’t utilize them, since we had ones in the rooms.

For an extra fee you can enjoy the petting zoo or mini-golf – neither of which we had the occasion to try. There is also another playground, a basketball court, and baseball diamond – none of which we had occasion to see / utilize.

The pricing was reasonable – on weeknights $75/night for two bedrooms or $65/night for one bedrooms.

I hope to return to them if occasion leads me back in the area in the future. A+.

So, the blog has been a little quiet for the last week or so – and I apologize for the lack of notice – I was out of town…but didn’t really want to broadcast that for the entire world to know. I know, I know, my audience consists entirely of fine upstanding individuals – but on the off chance that some creeper was out there looking for a chance to break in, I figured it would be best not to disclose. That said, I’m back and its time to start writing again.

Today I’d like to talk about Kingdom Bound (where I’ve been for the last so many days). Kingdom Bound is an annual Christian festival held at Darien Lake in Darien Center, NY. Darien Lake is a pretty amazing place in and of itself – a gigantic amusement and water park with numerous rides…and when you are attending Kingdom Bound you get free access to all of these for the entire multi-day festival:

The Predator – A huge, old wooden rollercoaster that still delivers serious thrills as it shakes and rumbles along the track.

The Viper – With its multiple loops and underground tunnel has not decreased in excitement with age.

The Mind Eraser – Legs dangle free, flips abound, and once in a while a poll or the ground feels just a little too close – an exciting and breathtaking ride.

Ride of Steel – Want to drop around 208 feet and reach speeds exceeding 70 mph? This is your ride.

Tornado – Affectionately nicknamed by some “The Toilet Bowl” its a fairly crazy water ride for two to four individuals on a water tube that drops into what appears somewhat like a giant toilet bowl – whirling you around the sides and then down and out into a large pool of water.

One could go on and on to mention the Big Kahuna, Grizzly Run, Shipwreck Falls, OCC Motocoaster, and the Boomerang…but you get the picture.

Now add onto this a seriously unbeatable and diverse lineup of Christian musical artists that in and of themselves are worth the price of admission and you have a must-go event. When I attended this year I saw Skillet put on perhaps the best live concert I have ever seen. I listened to Hawk Nelson getting everyone hyped up with their bouncy, upbeat tunes. I was there when Michael Tate led the Newsboys in an absolutely amazing concert and was joined by the original lead singer. Ahh, but that is just the start – other bands I personally saw include Salvador, Family Force 5, Pillar, and Relevant Worship. Other awesome artists included Matthew West, Francisca Battistelli, Natalie Grant, Israel Houghton, and on and on. While I’m not a hip-hop guy myself each day there was four solid hours of hip-hop!

Finally, there are the speakers and seminars. Kingdom Bound always brings in several high quality speakers who present on important issues of Christain faith. This year the highlight for me was David Nasser, an individual who during a regime change in Iran needed to escape with his family or risk the death of his father (a formerly high-ranking general). Nasser has an amazing and convicting message of his pursuit of happiness in the world and God’s eager pursuit of him.

Various seminars are available on a number of topics – including numerous seminars are various aspects of leading musical and drama ministries as well as topics such as personal modesty and a compassionate engagement of those who disagree with conservative Christians on gender identity topics.

Video Gaming has become a major part of our culture. Today, whether played individually or in groups (whether locally or via the internet) gaming has become as much a part of our culture as professional sports or television. Mario and Halo amongst other games have established themselves as bona fide cultural icons.

I’m a picky gamer. My personal preferred genre is turn-based, historical strategy/tactical wargames. A mouthful, huh? Why do I like these games so much?

They offer an educational experience with (generally) highly detailed maps and historically accurate units and commanders.

They offer a intellectually stimulating experience require the use of significant analytical skills to determine the best methods to victory.

They offer significantly more hours of gameplay than most other genres of games, especially simple-one path games like most first person shooters (FPS).

Within this genre one game that stands out as an excellent example and worthwhile purchase as an entertaining and educational resource is Creative Assembly’s Medieval II: Total War. This game is part of a old (in gaming years) and venerable line of “Total War” games beginning with Shogun: Total War and most recently culminating in Empire: Total War. While the graphics and artificial intelligence have improved with the years, the basic gameplay has stayed remarkably the same.

Each Total War game represents a distinct historical period – in the instance of Medieval the period is somewhat obvious – it covers the medieval time period (e.g. crusades, early discovery of the new world). One takes command of any of a variety of historical nations and oversees one’s countries progress – first at a strategic level that includes town management, technology development, political negotiations, and military recruitment. Then when combat occurs one has the choice to enter into the tactical arena and to command one’s troops in beautifully rendered 3D worlds through a pausable real-time interface (bringing the best of cinematic historical combat with the intellectual challenge of turn-based combat).

I’ve never exhausted the bounds of a Total War game. Playing as each nation is a unique experience. Each nation has its own unique historical advantages and disadvantages (e.g. England must rely upon naval power while nations in Eastern Europe face continuous threats to varied influxing enemies) and playing through a single nation’s history in a single game can be a process of scores – if not hundreds of hours. Medieval II: Total War is not a game one sits down and plays in a day or a week or even a month – its meant to last month after month (for the casual, moderate gamer) and then one has only finished the game as that nation!

Medieval II: Total War also have a worthwhile expansion pack called Kingdoms which retrofits some features in Medieval II: Total War along with adding several additional campaigns (each of which could be a game in and of itself) including the Crusades, Americas (early conquistadors, inter-tribal warfare), Teutonic, and Britannia.

MII:TW is now available at bargain prices…as are older titles in the same series. So go to Amazon and grab both titles for less than $20 (the cost of two movie tickets, or four dvd rentals): Medieval II Gold Pack (Total War, Total War Kingdoms). Yes, of course, I get a referral fee – but seriously – these games are awesome.

Today instead of a product or service I want to share a photo I took. I love my home. While I live in the suburbs, the wildlife is everywhere. Squirrels, ducks, rabbits, robins, and all forms of little critters wander about my property. One day recently when the temperature was exceedingly hot I looked out onto my deck and saw this.

Note the little guys arms and legs hanging over the sides, the sleepy closed eyelids. After taking several photos and attempting to get closer for a really good shot, he ran up a tree. Got a funny caption for those photo? Post it in the comments.

As I thought to myself, “I should really write a review tonight” I felt the blogging blues strike…I didn’t feel like it. But being the good blog author that I am (or want to be) I decided to plod ahead anyways. What could I review? Well I actually have so many products and services – though most fall into a few select categories (books, movies, websites, software, hardware, health/food/household products). I didn’t particularly feel like reviewing any of those tonight so to add some variety, I’d going to talk about cats.

“Ohh no, you are one of those cat people!” Well, traditionally I wouldn’t think of myself as a cat person. While I had two cats growing up the one drowned rather early on (a horrific story I’ll tell perhaps another time – end result being mad at my parents for not listening to me on the dangers inherent in keeping a cat in a garage with a water room) and the second was a barn cat – not the kind you grow extremely attached to. My wife (Charity) on the other hand loves cats and was convinced we should get one. Being much more of a dog person I disagreed – but “while the man may be the head, the woman is the neck and I turn the head whichever way I please” (thats from some movie…and my wife is great! don’t get the wrong idea).

When she told me about the small kitten she had found on the side of the road – dirty and tangled in duct tape, I couldn’t hold out any longer and Hermione became our first kitten. She would be followed several months later by Barclay and then nearly a year later by Piper. Now she’s talking about getting another one – and my heart has changed. While I won’t actively pursue more cats, on the other hand I can’t say no to the little fluff balls.

Yes, cats can be a nuisance sometimes. Not long after we got Barclay I was sleeping when I awoke to something warm spraying furiously onto my arm and head. It was Barclay. For some strange reason she had determined by bed and my body was the perfect place to relieve herself. Barclay still has a tendency to leave little brown nuggets every once in a while – or to spray an aroma on some piece of carpet. Piper believes blatantly stealing toast and meats from one’s plate off the table is acceptable. Hermione likes to whine – when she wants to be held, when she wants food, when she feels like it.

But…Those moments aside, cats are wonderful animals and their benefits far outweigh their nuisances. If you give a cat attention and love they will return it ten-fold. I am sure over time I’ll talk more about my life-long afflict with both Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and comorbid struggles with Depression. Cats (and my wife) are two of the greatest treatments I have found for these ailments (no, you should still go see a psychiatrist! yes i mean now!).
