Great post, Dave! For additional Salesforce / Google Apps integration, check out Cirrus Insight, the #2 most popular app on the Salesforce AppExchange. It displays information from Salesforce right alongside emails in Gmail. It also allows you to create new Leads and Contacts in Salesforce without leaving Gmail. It's a 30-second install and a 30-day free trial.

Well done! This list is quite extensive and will be very helpful :) During my sophomore year at Moody Bible Institute, I was privileged to sit under a professor of Bible who had been a practicing homosexual. He wrote a book, and while it is not academic in nature, it is very powerful.

A short review:

I respectfully disagree. I think it probably *is* best for the thermostat itself to offer a web interface similar to a wireless router, print server, NAS, managed switch, etc. This gives it a stand-alone capability, and that's where I'd prefer to start.

The external website method of controlling the thermostat as the *only* web interface seems utterly backwards to me. I won't have it! :-p

Here are some movies you might want to include that really touch the heart also. Some are small movies but have real heart and touch the soul.
These are just a few and have to reflect on others i have seen that really touched me.
The listing is in no special order (like highest to lowest) because they are all special in their own.
1. Bridge to Terebithia
2. My Bodyguard
3. The Help
4. Facing the Giants
5. Last Sineater
6. What Dreams May Come
7. Mr. Holland's Opus
8. Up
9. Breakfast at Tiffanys
10. Goodbye Girl
11. Exodus
12. Always
13. iTS A wonderful life
seen so many large and small that touch the heart over my 60 odd years and this is just the tip of the iceberg
So many so many more

Dave, great summary of your beefs. I still believe that Dropbox is superior, but that's my humble opinion. :-)

As to your note on backing up Google Docs, I'm a little confused. Isn't the purpose of Google Docs and GMail such that backups aren't necessary, being cloud solutions? Enlighten me.

Let the debate continue!

It is kind of surprising and I expect we will eventually see more with simple LAN interfaces - but if manufacturers can get customers to buy ones that use an "out-sourced" web interface, this provides ongoing revenue streams. Additionally, it probably isn't the best to have a "web server" device sitting on one's home network, and this may also be part of the reasoning. Still, some OSS software that could be hosted on a shared host (e.g. bluehost) could solve this dilemma.
If memory serves me right, I think Bayweb devices may allow for home lan interfaces.

I cannot believe that none of these have a simple home LAN interface. Am I just missing something?

I really don't believe in 3rd party websites, nor their monitoring and intrusion into my private home network.

If anyone knows of a LAN based solution, please post! I've now returned 2 because they said you could control them with your "home network" which is very misleading.
